I have been a member of the Parry Sound Y for several years. My original plan was to participate in some of the classes. When I retired I thought it was important to build the social aspect into my fitness regime. I did join some classes on a regular basis, but found that my attendance was becoming sporadic. I don’t live in Parry Sound and I seemed to find excuses to not get into town at the appropriate times. So, I inquired about some personal training sessions. I have been very fortunate to work with 3 different trainers, 2 of whom have left the Y for other employment. At first I was hesitant to work with Ashley as she is a friend of my daughters, but any reservations I had quickly disappeared once we started working together. Ashley is very much aware of my strengths and weaknesses and adjusts her programmes appropriately. While pushing me to stretch my physical limits, she encourages me to go the extra 10 seconds or 2 pounds and is aware of my capabilities….even when I doubt myself. That is a huge message to give me, “I have confidence that you can do this, and I am here to help you achieve it.”
Ashley is mindful of some aches and pains that I complain about, and often is able to adapt an exercise to cause less discomfort on my joints, but she does not let me get off lightly…..she would be doing me a disservice if she did. However, having said that, there are a couple of exercises that we have agreed are not for me …..yet!
Ashley is very organized in her approach to my programme. She explains what muscle groups are being targeted each time, and is always teaching me a variety of new exercises. She has also provided me with a couple of routines that I can do when I am working independently. The physiotherapist I see in Barrie is pleased with what I tell her we are doing, and Ashley has followed up on some suggestions she made.
Some of the benefits that I have found from working with a personal trainer are an increased mobility, self-confidence and a positive attitude toward exercise in general. The programme is geared to me, not to 8 or 10 other people in a class. Often discussion centres on food plans as well to optimize a healthy life style and help with exercise. Ashley is quick to offer suggestions and share ideas. The support and expectation that you can succeed are important messages from Ashley. All of this is motivation to continue on a journey of increasing physical fitness.
I enjoy working with Ashley and feel that she is knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive. I am glad that I did not let my reservations stop me from working with her.
