I have the pleasure of working in the Newcomer Services Department. I began work at the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka more than 20 years ago. Like all individuals starting a new job, I was a little apprehensive as to what to expect. It soon became evident that my concerns were unfounded. I was dealing with individuals who had given up everything to make a new life for themselves. The people I met were appreciative of everything I would do for them no matter how small. It made me realize how fortunate I was to live in Canada.
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has continued to support the many newcomers who flow through our doors to get language training, settlement services and help with seeking employment. Without language training it would be difficult to get employment. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has hired some of our newcomers.
I meet my former clients around this area as they transform their lives and become the entrepreneurs, the business people and the employees. They tell me of their own success stories and especially of the success of their children. I must say I share in their pride when I hear from them. My life has been enriched by working with such wonderful individuals.
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka truly has made a difference in the lives of new immigrants settling here.
