It is challenging for me to put into words the impact that the Y has had on my life since I became involved with my Y when I was only 13.

My family was experiencing a challenging divorce and I was having an especially hard time seeing my home life in such disarray. Their once happy go lucky daughter was losing her enthusiasm and interest in school and my grades were dropping too. I was in turmoil and, as a teenager, I didn’t have the skills to cope.

My mother signed me up for YMCA basketball, with financial assistance thanks to the help of donations to the Y.

This was a turning point for me.

Thanks to that opportunity I was active, made new friends, and found a much needed role model in my Y coach. Not only was she the coolest thing since sliced bread, but she also recognized strengths in me that I didn’t know I had. She encouraged me to apply to volunteer at the local Y day camp for the summer. One summer turned into two, which turned into three, and so on. I was hooked on camp and hooked on the Y.

Since then I have spent four camp seasons working and living at YMCA Camp Kitchi. I am now the role model for kids and adolescents that needed one as much as I did way back when.

Thanks for your donation – it had an impact.
